Throughout Japanese culture, the Japanese plum has been prominent and important. Just like cherry blossom, the arrival of spring is linked with the plum as plum blossoms are often the first to open. For example, in Tokyo you can see plum blossom in February and March. This is heralded with many plum festivals, or ume matsuri, which occur in shrines and temples as well as public parts all across Japan.

Kutani Ware

Kutani ware is a style of Japanese porcelain first established by Goto Saijiro after the mid-seventeenth century. Production of Kutani ware ceased at the end of the 17th century, but commenced again in the 19th century. The porcelain style is known for five colors: red, yellow, green, purple and navy, which are used to paint over dynamic line drawings.
